1. Who operates Relay

For privacy questions or requests, contact nate.breeden@outlook.com.

- Usage and event information, such as sign-in times, feature use, interactions with servers and channels, moderation actions, and system events.
- Device and technical information, such as IP address, browser or app type, operating system, device identifiers, language, and diagnostic or crash data, to the extent collected by Relay or its providers.
- Cookie or similar storage data used for login, security, preferences, and service operation.
- Voice and video connection data needed to deliver real-time features, which may include network and device information. Relay does not record voice, video, or screen shares.
Information from others
We may receive information from other users, Server Administrators, email delivery providers, security providers, or people who report content or conduct. For example, a report may include the reported content and information about the report. We may also receive delivery and verification status from email providers.
3. How we use information
We use information, as applicable, to:
- Create and operate accounts, servers, channels, messages, voice/video, invites, search, discovery, and other requested features.
- Deliver email verification, account notices, password resets, and support responses.
- Apply permissions, prevent spam and abuse, review reports, enforce our Terms, and protect Relay and users.
- Diagnose failures, secure systems, maintain backups, and improve reliability and performance.
- Respond to user requests, appeals, and legal obligations.
- Establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
- Communicate important service changes and, if Relay later offers optional marketing messages, send them according to applicable law and user choices.
We do not use personal information for targeted advertising unless this policy is updated to explain that practice and any legally required choices.
4. How information is shared
- With other users: Your username, profile details, messages, uploads, presence, and activity may be visible to people with access to the relevant profile, server, channel, direct message, or feature. Server Administrators and users with assigned permissions may see information available in their server or moderation tools. Direct messages are not guaranteed to be confidential from the people in the conversation.
- With service providers: Providers may process information for hosting, databases, file storage, email delivery (including verification email), security, diagnostics, support, or voice/video delivery. They may use information only as needed to provide services to Relay, subject to their agreements and applicable law.
- For safety and legal reasons: We may preserve, use, or disclose information if we reasonably believe it is needed to comply with law or legal process, respond to valid government requests, enforce our Terms, investigate abuse or security incidents, protect users or the public, or establish or defend legal rights.
- Business changes: Information may be transferred as part of a merger, financing, reorganization, sale, or transfer of Relay or its assets, subject to applicable law and appropriate notice where required.
- With your direction: We may share information when you ask us to or use a feature that makes it visible to others.
We do not sell personal information for money. If Relay engages in a practice legally defined as a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, we will update this policy and provide required opt-outs before doing so.
5. Public, shared, and sensitive content
Content posted in public or discoverable areas may be viewable, copied, captured, or redistributed by others. Content in a private server or direct message is available to its participants and may also be processed by Relay's systems and reviewed by authorized staff for limited safety, support, security, or legal purposes. Permissions are not end-to-end encryption and do not guarantee secrecy.
Do not post passwords, financial account details, government identification numbers, precise location, private contact details, or other sensitive information unless you understand who may access it and have a clear reason to share it. Do not upload illegal content or content that violates another person's rights.
6. Retention and deletion
We keep information for as long as reasonably needed to provide Relay, meet the purposes described above, comply with law, resolve disputes, enforce our Terms, protect users, and maintain security. Different information may have different retention periods.
When an account is deleted, we will delete or de-identify information that we no longer need, subject to applicable law and technical limits. Some information may remain for a limited time in encrypted or access-restricted backups, recipients' copies, moderation and abuse-prevention records, legal records, or logs needed to protect Relay. Backup copies are generally removed as they rotate out under our backup schedule.
You may request account deletion by contacting support through a ticket in the official Relay server or emailing nate.breeden@outlook.com. We may ask for reasonable proof that you control the account. Deleting an account may not remove messages or files already received, copied, or retained by other users.
7. Security
We use security tokens, user IDs, rate limiting, cookies, and other measures to help protect information. No internet service, storage system, email system, or transmission method is completely secure. We cannot promise that unauthorized access, loss, or disclosure will never occur.
If a security incident occurs, we will investigate, take reasonable steps to contain and address it, and provide notices required by applicable law. Nothing in this policy waives those duties.
8. Your choices and privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of certain personal information, or to object to or limit certain processing. Some rights have exceptions. To make a request, email nate.breeden@outlook.com with the subject "Privacy Request." We may need to verify your identity and may ask for additional information. You may appeal a denial by contacting nate.breeden@outlook.com.
You can update certain profile details in Relay. You can disable cookies through your browser, though some account and security features may stop working. You can block users or leave servers, but this does not erase information already received by other users.
If you are a parent or legal guardian and believe a child under 13 provided personal information to Relay, contact nate.breeden@outlook.com. We will take steps required by applicable law, which may include deleting the information. Do not send sensitive documents unless we request them through a safe process.
9. Children and teens
Relay is intended for people age 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly permit children under 13 to create accounts. If we learn that we collected personal information from a child under 13 without legally required consent, we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
Teens should use privacy settings carefully, avoid sharing identifying or sensitive information, and tell a trusted adult if they encounter unsafe conduct. Parents and guardians should supervise minors' use of online communication services. Relay cannot guarantee that users will not encounter offensive, inaccurate, or unlawful content.
10. International processing
Relay and its service providers may process or store information in the United States and other countries where they operate. Privacy laws in those locations may differ from the laws where you live. Where required, we will use legally recognized transfer safeguards.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Relay changes. We will update the effective date and, for material changes, provide notice through Relay or another reasonable method. The current version will be available at relayapp.net/privacy.
